I am growing fond of Samsung products since I got my hands on Samsung netbook, the NC10. The brand Samsung impresses me more after I bought Samsung Omnia i900. Yesterday, I was browsing through Argos’ catalogue and looking at Samsung’s digital cameras. The prices are competitive and the functions are no less than other well known brands in the digital cameras’ world. Well, I am not looking forward to buying one since Mee already got a Canon Ixus65 but I will certainly consider Samsung’s digital cameras if we are going to buy a new digital camera.
Samsung Omnia i900 was on the market since June 2008 while Samsung Omnia HD i8910 was announced on February 2009 and will be available soon. At first, I was reluctant to buy Samsung Omnia i900 as I heard that Samsung Omnia HD i8910 will be a HD version (as mentioned in the name) and have a better touch screen. However, I decided to buy Samsung Omnia i900 as soon as I knew that Samsung Omnia HD i8910 will be running on Symbian OS. Furthermore, Samsung Omnia HD i8910 will be very expensive.
History with Symbian OS
I have had several phones with Symbian OS; before and now. Nokia 6630 and Nokia E61 are still with me while I traded in Sony Ericsson P990i for Samsung Omnia i900. Symbian OS version of UIQ in Sony Ericsson P990i was less impressive compared to Symbian OS S60 in Nokia 6630 and Nokia E61. There is not much useful software and the development seems to have stopped. Both Nokia 6630 and Nokia E61 were fun and customizable during their time but I grew tired eventually. Thus, I decided to make a change through by selecting a Windows Mobile Phone. As much as I hate about Windows, I still like Windows products.
After reading lots of reviews, I was attracted by Samsung Omnia i900. It is sad that Samsung chooses to have Symbian OS in Samsung Omnia HD i8910. I was glad at the same time because Samsung Omnia i900 will be in a different category even though it seems that the HD is the successor.
Samsung Omnia HD i8910
By looking at the phone, Samsung Omnia HD i8910 has more curves but the silver lining looks a bit plastic and just like any other phones. On the other hand, Samsung Omnia i900 black copper lining looks elegant and different even though it feels plastic, hehe.
What’s good in Samsung Omnia HD i8910
It is a HD version of mobile phone. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack, microUSB, impressive 16million colors screen, 8MP camera and capacitive touchscreen. The capacitive touchscreen will mean that the touchscreen will only respond to fingers and nothing else, not even stylus. However, I have fallen in love with the handwriting recognition recently and have been writing my tasks to do on Samsung Omnia i900. On the other hand, the capacitive touchscreen has better response than the resistive touchscreen in Samsung Omnia i900. Still, these are the things which I would like to have in Samsung Omnia i900 though they are not essential.
My Theories
HD – High Definition
I do not need high definition as I will not be watching videos on my mobile phone. The screen is bigger than normal mobile phones but it is still not big enough.
3.5mm Headphone Jack
It will be a very nice addition. To me, it is a must for any phones manufactured after the year 2008. I can live without it because I have a device called MP3 player specifically designed for listening to music.
miniUSB
As long as I remember to bring my Samsung cable, Samsung Omnia i900 can be used as USB device anywhere, anytime.
8MP Camera
Samsung Omnia i900 has a 5MP camera but the functionalities like geo-tagging, slow-motion video recording, face and smile detections are the same in Samsung Omnia HD i8910. Well, Samsung Omnia HD i8910 has higher frames per second video recording but I can live without it too.
Capacitive and resistive touchscreen
As mentioned earlier, I love to do some handwriting on my phone even though I am a little bit frustrated by the not-so-responsive-resistive-touchscreen.
Conclusion
Reviews have said that Samsung Omnia HD i8910 was very good indeed and the Symbian OS S60 release 5 has improvements over the previous releases. Hmm… I do believe it will prove to be a big hit when it is available on the market. At the same time, I am getting used to Windows Mobile phones already.
Windows Mobile’s interface is still not very user-friendly for touchscreen users but there are programs in the market that help to enhance the usability of Windows Mobile in a touchscreen phone. I guess I will not be changing my phone again until it is broken.
