I eagerly opened the box but was not surprised at all because I had watched videos of reviewers un-boxing their Samsung NC10. The package includes a white Samsung NC10, a 6-cell battery, DVDs, power adapter, a netbook pocket and some simple manuals.

The Unit
The battery seems to be heavier than the netbook itself. As reviewed, the netbook pocket is simple and enough to protect the netbook. The Samsung NC10 feels solid and compact. The LCD looks great and I am glad that the access to the memory module is not restricted by a warranty sticker.

Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP runs smoothly. Samsung Recovery Solution III prompted when I switched on the netbook. It then offered to backup Windows XP to the hard disk so that I do not have to use the DVD if the system corrupts. Everything was done by clicking Next and Next and Next. Voila! Samsung NC10 with Windows XP Home Edition.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is impressive. I only managed to fiddle around with the function keys such as controlling the volume, brightness and the likes. There is also a speed control with three different modes; silent mode, normal mode and turbo mode. I have problem going to turbo mode. I will try it again tonight.

The touchpad is small. Very small. Occasionally, I found myself scrolling on to the keyboard. Other than that, it is precise.

Speaker and Webcam
I tested the webcam and the picture was clear. The motion rendered faster than my USB webcam which is attached to my desktop. The speaker is not as bad as suggested in some forums. It is loud and clear. It is controlled by RealTek driver but I have yet to play around with the equalizer.

Verdict
It is tiny except the keyboard. I wish the screen could be more than 10” but that will add extra weight to the netbook. To have bigger screen yet maintaining the same weight, the netbook will be pricier. Hence, that is kind of out of question. I have yet to try out the WiFi and Bluetooth but I guess it will be easy to configure.

I love laptops that are compact and with a budget of £400, it is wise to get a netbook rather than a 15” laptop. After all, I am not going to use it to play games. I think I made the right choice.

Thanks for this review. I’ve been finding it so hard to get trustworthy info about this netbook and what it comes with.

I was in John Lewis’s yesterday in my town (Aberdeen) and was told that the NC10 came with NO paper manuals whatsoever, not even a Getting Started. Also that it came with no bootable CD-ROM or DVD. The chap couldn’t tell me what F-key you hit to get to the BIOS to change the boot sequence, and he said there would be no information on paper telling me how to do this. I was appalled to think I could end up with a goosed, unbootable, NC10 and with no knowledge of how to boot off a bootable CD or DVD because I hadn’t written it down from the preloaded user guide (which, I noted, wasn’t printable, because it’s actually a .exe programme and not a .pdf file).

    But…

from what you’ve written, if you had to recover from a) your hard disk recovery area or b) your DVD, would the result be identical? i.e. do both a) the hard drive partition you created and b) the DVD supplied contain all the extras like MS Works as well as XP itself?

Does the DVD contain a user guide and if so, is it an executable (.exe) or a readable file?

    Where did you buy yours?!

    Many thanks.

The NC10 is a great choice of netbook imo. I have heard very few people who have not been impressed by it, I think a lot of people don’t expect much from their netbooks so when they actually get hold of this device their expectations are exceeded. To all intents it is a fully functional mini laptop and easy to use.

If you recover your netbook using DVD, it will be like a fresh installation. I mean it will be the same when you first switch on your netbook. As for the hard disk recovery area, it depends. With Samsung Recovery Solution III, you can write the current state of your hard drive onto the hard disk recovery area. For example, if you installed Microsoft Word, saved some photos, installed Firefox browser and some other software, you can run the Samsung Recovery Solution III and it will backup the current state of your hard drive onto the recovery area. So, if your hard drive got corrupted (touch wood!), you will be able to restore your hard drive to the state where you still have all your installed software available.

My netbook does not come with MS Works though. It came only with Windows XP and McAfee Security Center which expired after a month. The guide came installed in the netbook and it is quite comprehensive. As for the DVDs, I never really look at them, so I could not tell you exactly the contents.

    I bought mine from Dixons.co.uk.

I am sorry because I do not get notifications on this blog when comments are posted. I will try to get it fixed and hopefully, I will be more responsive in the future. If you need more details, you can send a contact to me through http://myi4u.me and we shall discuss through email.

The fifth comment by Jez from Samsung NC10 Community is a good source if you want to see the pictures and upcoming news of netbooks. It played it’s part in my decision on purchasing Samsung NC10.

    Thank you.

Thanks very much, myi4u, for your reply. I’m reassured and am buying one, hopefully (if my present laptop lets me) in the next half hour. Will update my views of it when it arrives. Thanks again. (I got here by googling “samsung nc10 review”!)
