I had watched the much anticipated movie: The Happening. Well, at least I was anticipating it. Hmm… mysteries, scary, strange things happen and people dying. That almost sums up most of the features of a horror film. The trailer is brilliant too, but not for long.

Everyone is happy during the day in Central Park. People are jogging, chatting and walking to work in the busy city. Soon, everyone just stop their actions. Few screams are heard and nobody cares. A woman sitting on a bench stabs herself with a hair pin and her friend screams in horror. Next, construction workers at a site start to fall off the roof and people in the surrounding area seem to be confused by the act. Well, up to this point, I thought this story is going to be very exciting,

The scene then moves to a classroom where Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) a science teacher, is giving a lecture. Minutes later, he is summoned to an emergency meeting and is told to dismiss his class because there is a report on possible terrorist attack in Central Park. More strange cases happen where people kill themselves on a busy road.

As people start to flee Philadelphia, Elliot, his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), Julian and his daughter Jess and other passengers are stranded in a small town because the conductors have lost contact with the traffic controllers. Julian leaves his daughter with Elliot and Alma to search for his wife in Princeton but he kills himself upon arriving at the infected Princeton.

As Elliot, Alma, Jess and a couple try to find a safe place, they see dead bodies on the road. They turn back to the previous junction to find another road out. However, other survivors from different directions are also going towards the junction. They have nowhere to go. They set off on foot but eventually, most of them die. The whole incident ended the next day morning and scientists claim that it was caused by natural toxins emitted from plants.

Effect
The dead bodies on the road and hanging on trees are scary as well as people committing suicides scene. The sound and music incorporate well with each scene. The moment when construction workers start to fall off the roof is frightening. It would be even startling if the fallen bodies hit the people on the ground.

Storyline
The movie starts off very well. I thought I was watching one of the scariest movies. Not at all. It gives a frightening yet mystery feel at the beginning until they set off on foot to avoid more killings. Nobody is trying to kill them and it is just the wind that is chasing them with the toxin emitted by the plants. The ending is absurd. The incident happens to stop just when the actor and actress prepare to face it.

Verdict
Watch the first half of the movie and that is what I will suggest. The second half is boring and just boring. In the first part of the movie, it is chilly when you watch people killing themselves. As soon as I finished watching the movie, I thought it would have been more excited if people are killing each others rather than committing suicides. Being targeted by the toxin is never thrilling compared to being pursued by living things.

If this movie is in your list, remove it please.
