I have always quite fancied watching movies casting Nicholas Cage since I watched Face Off. Among the movies that I watched were Gone in 60 Seconds, Bringing Out the Dead, National Treasure, World Trade Center, Ghost Rider, Bangkok Dangerous and now, Knowing. I always thought that he has the look and voice which could easily make you concentrates on watching and listening to him even though he is not very good looking. However, I almost fell asleep while watching Knowing.

It is year 1959 when a new elementary school celebrates its opening with an idea came from one of its students. The idea is to plant a time capsule and it shall be opened 50 years later. In addition, each of the students is given the opportunity to draw a picture of the future which will then be inserted into the time capsule. While the students are drawing their pictures, a teacher discovers that one of her students is writing numbers on the paper instead. In fact, the student, Lucinda Embry is the originator of the time capsule idea. The teacher is confused but she takes the paper away from Lucinda since the time is up, leaving Lucinda’s work unfinished.

50 years later, the time capsule is unearthed. All current students are handed a drawing kept in the time capsule. Caleb, the son of MIT professor, John Koestler, receives Lucinda’s envelope. He does not know what the numbers mean but since then, he keeps hearing whispers. On the other hand, John discovers the ‘drawing’ in Caleb’s school bag and he soon finds the numbers to be dates and death tolls of every major disaster since 1959. I anticipated Wall-E since I first saw the advertisement and then the trailer. I waited for Mee to watch this movie with me but she was very busy especially during weekends until the third week of December where she did not work on Sunday. Finally, we watched it together and thought it was a good movie. I believe kids would enjoy it most even though we enjoyed it as well.

Wall-E are machines that compressed the Earth’s garbage. However, the Earth’s garbage problem has become unmanageable until there are no rooms to accommodate the garbage. Humans then abandon the Earth to live in the space. Well, the word abandon is not quite suitable because the humans have made a promise to themselves that when the garbage problem is resolved, they will return. Hence, they treat their trip to space as a vacation. Sadly, their vacation is on and going for hundreds of years since.

Wall-E project is classified as failed but there is still one faithful little Wall-E that continues to work and work and work even though the other machines have malfunctioned. Wall-E works from day to night and charges itself through solar power in the morning. Each day, Wall-E separates and categorizes some items from the garbage and brings them back to a big Wall-E.

One day, Wall-E discovers a plant while rummaging through the garbage. It does not know what it is but hence, it takes it back to its resting place. As years pass by, humans send machines to Earth in search for living things. The plant which is discovered by Wall-E is detected by one of the machines. However, unknown to Wall-e about the purposes of the machines, it falls in love with one of the machines.

This is certainly a family with young children type of movie. No violence (except some dog fight), quite funny and a bunch of talking dogs. Well, luckily, they are just translations of dog’s words. The human in the movie does not understand the dog’s conversations except ‘woof’. But this movie does surprise me.
